雅思词汇：decide 和 determine 都有“决定”的意思，但它们的语气不同

      束手无策或无所事事的人总是埋怨人生没有太多的选择，于是要么坐以待毙，要么浑浑噩噩，这是在浪费不可再生的时间和生命;其实人生或多或少都是有选择的，只是不同的选择面临的结果或付出的代价不同。

　　在英语中常用 decide to do sth 来表示决定做某事，表示从许多可能性中选择，经过考虑或协商后作出判断或选择，拿定主意做某件事而不做另外一件，例如：

　　In the end, we decided to go to the theatre.最后，我们决定去看戏。

　　They decided to base the new company in York. 他们决定将新成立的公司总部设在约克郡。

　　They decided to go out for pizza after the movie was over.电影结束后，他们决定出去吃比萨饼。

　　Decide 也常用于短语动词 decide on/upon sth 中，例如：

　　We're still trying to decide on a venue.我们仍然在设法选定一个会场。

　　I've decided on blue for the bathroom.我已决定浴室用蓝色。

　　那么在表示决定做某事时 decide 和 determine 有什么区别呢?此时 determine 的英文解释是：decide definitely to do sth，由此可以看出 determine 表示的语气比 decide 强烈，表示非常明确地做某事，后面常接 on 或动词不定式，例如：

　　They determined to start early.他们决定早点出发。

　　He determined to find out the real reason.他决心找出真正的原因。

　　The whole group determined on an early start.全队人都决定早点出发。

　　当表示决心或决定时，determine 对应的分词形容词 determined 通常不用来修饰名词，它常用于搭配 sb (be) determined to do sth，也用来某人表示决定或决心做某事，不允许任何人或困难阻止，例如：

　　I'm determined to succeed.我决心要获得成功。

　　He is determined to live amongst his people and travel with them.他决心与他的人民一起生活和旅行。

　　After the fire we were determined to pick up the pieces and get the business back on its feet.火灾发生后，我们决定收拾残局，让生意恢复元气。

　　但是 determined 意为“坚定的;坚决的;果断的”时，可以作前置定语来修饰名词，例如：

　　She had a determined look on her face.她脸上带着坚定的表情。

　　The proposal had been dropped in the face of determined opposition.这项建议因遭到坚决反对而被放弃。

　　与 determined 不同的是，decide 对应的分词形容词 decided 没有这个用法，此时的 decided 常用作前置定语，意为“明显的，明白无误的”等，相当于 distinct，例如：

　　She had a decided advantage over her opponent.她比对手有明显的优势。

　　There’s been a decided improvement in subway service.地铁服务有了明显的改善。
