雅思词汇：in the dark，不要全部理解为“把在暗处”，有时它有其他的意思

       在英语中 dark 很容易跟 black 混起来，作形容词时，dark 意为“黑的，暗的”等，主要指由于光线不足或缺乏照明而变得黑暗，使人看不见眼前物体，用于比喻时则指阴险的、邪恶的，而 black 主要颜色是黑色的，有时也指某处因光线不足而黑暗的。

　　Dark 和 black 都可以作名词，然而“在黑暗中”只用 in the dark，而不用 black，因为 in the dark 指的处于光线不足的地方，而 in the black 另有它意，意为“有盈余，有结余”等，对应的是 in the red，意为“负债，亏空”等，它们是依据报表上盈余或亏空的数字的颜色而演变的，例如：

　　This year our business is in the black.今年我们的生意是有盈余的。

　　The company has been in the red for the last three quarters.这家公司过去三个季度一直亏损。

　　那么是否有人会问“在黑暗中”中为什么不是 in dark 呢?这个是因为 dark 作名词意为“暗处，黑暗”时，只用单数 the dark，如：

　　Are the children afraid of the dark?孩子们怕黑吗?

　　Cats can see in the dark.猫在黑暗中能看见东西。

　　但是并不是所有的 in the dark 都意为“在黑暗中”，就像之前说的，很多短语不仅只有它们的字面意思，它们往往也有其他显而易见的的寓意，如 in the bag 或 in deep water 等等;因为在暗处，所以视觉处于失效状态，因此 in the dark 用来比喻对某事全然不知。

　　In the bag，不仅只有“在袋子里”的意思，它还有寓意“稳操胜券，十拿九稳”等，in deep water 也还有“在困境中，在危难中”的寓意，例如：

　　I haven't got the job I applied for, but I know it's in the bag.我还没有得到我申请的那份工作，但我知道十拿九稳。

　　You certainly seem to be in deep water.你看起来确实陷入了困境。

　　In the dark，还可以意为“一无所知，蒙在鼓里，茫然无知”等，后面常接 about，常用于搭配 keep sb in the dark 中，例如：

　　Workers were kept in the dark about the plans to sell the company.工人全然不知出售公司的计划。

　　I'm really sorry that I kept you in the dark about my promotion but management thought it would create problems within the team.我真的很抱歉让你对我的晋升一无所知，但管理层认为这会给团队带来问题。

　　由此可见，无论什么处于 in the dark 的环境，都不会是一个好环境，且在此环境中的任何举动都是乱来的，如 a shot/stab in the dark，意为“瞎猜，盲干，盲动”等，还有 a leap in the dark，意为“冒险举动”等，例如：

　　The result he came up with was really just a shot in the dark.他得出的结果其实只是瞎猜的。

　　Prudent people are not going to take a leap in the dark.小心谨慎的人是不会轻易冒险的。
