雅思词汇：a whole lot 和 the whole lot 差一字，意思却差别很大

       在表述物体数量多时，正式的表达方式是用 many 和 much，但是英语中还存在其他表达方式，常见的有 a lot of，plenty of，a good many 或 a great deal 等等。

　　其中比较常见的是用 a lot of 或 lots of 来表示数量的多少，意为“许多”，它们表示数量大，但是没有指明数量的多少，后面接可数名词的复数形式或是不可数名词;当它作主语时，谓语动词的形式根据所接的名词是否可数而变化，例如：

　　A lot of people are coming to the meeting. 有很多人要来参加这次会议。

　　A lot of work is still outstanding. 许多工作尚未完成。

　　There's always a lot of traffic at this time of day. 每天这个时候总是有很多来往车辆。

　　There are a lot of empty properties in the area. 这个地区有大量的闲置房地产。

　　Whole 是形容词，意为“整体的，全部的”等，它只作前置定语，此时我们可以在 a lot of 中加 whole 来表示“许许多多，大量”，相当于 a large amount/ number of;其中 amount 和 number 在短语中的区别是 a amount of 修饰不可数名词，而 a number of 修饰可数名词。

　　A whole lot of 和 a lot of 都表示数量多，后面接可数名词复数形式或不可数名词，它们的意思是一样的，例如：

　　There were a whole lot of people I didn't know.有许多人我都不认识。

　　I lost a whole lot of money.我丢了好多钱。

　　同理，我们知道 a lot 还可以作副词，修饰动词、形容词或副词，意为“非常，很”，此时相当于作副词的 much，因此 a whole lot 也有类似的用法，它也意为“非常，很”，例如：

　　I'm feeling a whole lot better.我觉得好得多了。

　　Things were about to get a whole lot worse.事情会变得更糟。

　　但是 the whole lot 却是与 a whole lot 意思完全不一样的短语，这个就要从 lot 的意思出发;其实 lot 作名词时，意为“全体，全部，整个”，因此 the whole lot 就是全部的意思，相当于 everything，通常作不定代词，例如：

　　I've sold the whole lot.我把所有的东西都卖了。

　　She's annoyed with the whole lot of you.她对你们都很生气。
