雅思词汇：a second bite at the cherry，不要理解为它的字面意思，它另有它意

      Bite 是指借助牙齿完成的动作，作动词时，是一个不规则动词，动作执行者可以是人，也可以是动物，如狗或蚊子等;当有人说 I won't bite 时，不是在表达这个人不会咬人，而是在表达不要害怕这个人。

　　除了作动词之外，bite 还可以作名词，常用作可数名词，就像习语 a second bite at the cherry 中的 bite 一样;它的字面意思是“在樱桃上面的第二口”，然而它的实际寓意不是这个，因为从修饰地点的角度来分析，若要表示樱桃上面有咬口，应该用介词 in，因为咬后的齿印是深陷樱桃里面的。

　　而 at 修饰地点时，通常是把这个位置或地方当作一个点，这个点大到一个公司，小到一个樱桃都是可以的，那么 at the cherry 是把 the cherry 当作一个点，那么 a second bite at the cherry 很明显不是“在樱桃上面的第二口”，而应该是“樱桃旁边的第二口”，但这个意思又跟实际冲突，因此这个习语另有它意。

　　A second bite at the cherry，用来比喻做某事的第二次机会，有时也可以用作 a second bite at the apple，只是后者出现的时间比较晚，但是它们的寓意是一样的，例如：

　　They were eager for a second bite of the cherry.他们渴望能得到第二次机会。

　　The professor made a decision to give him a second bite at the cherry.教授决定再给他一次机会。

　　He has failed his driving test, but he will have a second bite at the cherry.他驾驶考试不及格，但他将有第二次机会。

　　我们还可以用 a second bite of the cherry 来表示，此时 of 表示所有关系，也就是 a second bite 是属于 the cherry 的;其实当 bite 作名词时，当我们要表达咬了几口什么，比如三明治等时，就可以用 bites of the sandwich 来表示，其中的 bite 表示”(咬下的)口“，例如：

　　She took a couple of bites of the sandwich.她咬了两口三明治。

　　He took a few bites of the chicken and drank some water.他咬了几口鸡，喝了些水。

　　He didn't eat a bite of his dinner.他一口饭也没吃。

　　Bite of 或 bites of 是一个非常实用的表达方式，因为作动词的 bite、eat 或 have 等都表达不出”咬了几口“，总不能说 bite two of the sandwich 或 eat three of sandwich 之类的吧，不但太中式，而且语法上也是错误的。

　　但是有的时候作名词的 bite 不表示“咬了几口”，而表示少量的食物，常用于搭配 a bite (to eat) 中，不要把它理解为“吃了一口”，它意为“小量食物;简单的一餐”，例如：

　　We just have time for a bite to eat before the movie.电影开演之前，我们只有匆匆吃一点东西的时间。

　　We don't have a lot of time, so let's just grab a quick bite to eat before the movie starts.我们的时间不多，所以在电影开始前，我们先吃点东西吧。
